In this advanced research seminar we will examine a variety of theoretical and methodological ways of approaching the shifting dynamics of globally circulating popular culture with a focus on televisual media. Next to interpretive methods and questions of production and distribution, we will also explore a selection of basic concepts and tools from Digital Humanities, including algorithms and neural networks, to discern their increasing importance in the field of cultural analytics with a critical view towards how these can be combined with more common methods of cultural analysis. While participants should have prior knowledge of and experience in film and/or TV analysis, we will work out the theoretical contexts together and discuss them against the backdrop of selected examples from current televisual media. The seminar will be accompanied by presentations and discussions of current research projects and demands a willingness to engage with a broad variety of contexts and theories. Credit for the listed modules can be obtained through small research projects that will be arranged in individual consultations.
