Intercultual Service Learning is an innovative pedagoy that links intercultural learning and civic engagement. In this course, we will investigate the broad field of intercultural education in the foreign language classroom and in particular discover the potential of Intercultural Service Learning. In order to familiarize with this pedagogy, you will not only have the chance to approach it from a theoretical point of view but also engage in a practical project that includes collaboration with university students in India.
Since gaining a more differentiated perspective on local and global issues is also part of the project goals, there will be one session in which we discuss a literary text that describes an incident which was caused by a government decision that intended to protect the tigers but disregarded human rights (Morichjhapi incident). Please read Amitav Ghosh's novel 'The Hungry Tide' before the course starts.
Please note that our collaboration with the Indian partner college requires some flexibility with regard to our schedule: Three sessions will be replaced by digital meetings/workshops with the Indian university students.
Due to the time shift and the Indian students' schedule we had to arrange some of the meetings on the weekend. The dates of the digital international project meetings are as follows:
Sat, 14.05.2022, 10-12.30 (instead of the course on 11.05.2022)
Sat, 28.05.2022, 10-12.00 (instead of the course on 25.05.2022)
Wed, 01.06.2022, 17.30-18.30 (instead of the session in the morning)
