The etymology of the word community can be traced back to the Latin word "communitas", which means "shared in common and public spirit". Hence, community denotes a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic or a likeness in common. There is no distinct diversity among them; they share common characteristics such as religion, language, caste, age, sex, family and kinship, profession, and, residence. Therefore, homogeneity acts as a core element in a community.
Different from that, a society has a much wider scope in comparison to community. A society is characterized by heterogeneity embracing people having different conflicts and differences. Hence, likenesses, as well as conflicts, exist simultaneously within a society. However, since society is vast, there is every possibility of adjustment and cooperation between people. Furthermore, defined geographic locality is not an essential element for society, unlike for a community.
The seminar will turn to the portrayal of individuals in interaction with society and community. We shall look at specific ways literature can constitute communities of their own in that they interact with their readers. Studying various theories society and community will make us reflect upon the avenues and dead ends of a "literary community."
We shall study the following texts:
Charles Dickens, Hard Times; Thomas Hardy, Jude the Obscure; James Joyce, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man; Ian McEwan, Atonement.
Dickens, Hardy, and Joyce are available as inexpensive Oxford World Classics, McEwan's Atonement is available as an Anchor paperback (ISBN: 978-0385721790).
