The seminar is meant to be an introductory course into Canadian and Quebecois politics, history, and society. Starting with the political system of Canada and the nature of Canadian federalism, the course will deal with the special position of Québec and its conflictive relationship with the rest of Canada. Examining the roots of this conflict and the nature of a distinct Quebecois society, we want to understand how this highly decentralized Canadian federation was able to survive until today. Therefore we also have to take a closer look at the political actors (parties) in this “game”.
The second part of the course will deal more with the societal issues of the Canadian and Quebecois nation. We will examine Canadian multiculturalism and Quebecois “interculturalisme” as well as questions of aboriginal governance and Canadian/Quebecois nation-building.
Students will gain in-depth insights into Canadian and Quebecois politics by discussion and reading key texts of political scientists and political sociologists.
