In this course we will outline the parameters of discussion of the World Literature debate in relation to that surrounding ‘Postcolonial’ Literatures. Which ‘postcolonial’ authors and texts are considered to be contributors to ‘world literature’ and why? How do these texts relate to or transgress specific regional and national contexts? What roles do the literary market and literary prizes play? Based on a critical reading of key contributions to these debates, we will analyze current shifts towards the contested framework of Anglophone World Literature(s). Literary texts under examination to be read and purchased include Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart (1958), Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale (1985) and Salman Rushdie’s Two Years Eight Months and Twenty-Eight Nights (2015). All other materials will be made available via Digicampus.
