Kommentar/Beschreibung

In this course we will read and discuss various works of author James Baldwin (1924-1987) and the many larger topics his writing speaks to so powerfully, such as justice, power, race, sexuality, violence, exile, and American society.

Baldwin is one of the most crucial American authors of the 20th century and his contemporary relevance for current times is shown by the frequency with which interviews resurface and quotes from his work are circulated. In 2016, the documentary I Am Not Your N*gro illustrated various connections between the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, the forms of oppression Baldwin criticized in writing and in person throughout his life, and the Black Lives Matter Protests of the 2010s.

We will read and discuss a number of fiction and non-fiction texts by Baldwin, such as Another Country, Giovanni’s Room, and The Fire Next Time and consider them in the diverse historical and theoretical contexts in which they are relevant, such as The Harlem Renaissance, The Civil Rights Movement, Racism, Homophobia, Intersectionality …
