The 21st century has seen a growing interest in examining the interface between drama, theatre and affect(s). Existing literature in the field includes historical studies as much as more transhistorical surveys and contemporary approaches; among the latter, the focus on performance, live art, dance and/or applied/activist/socially engaged modes is preeminent.
The starting point for us is that there is an important contribution to be made to this critical landscape if we turn our attention to (a) the relevance and the workings of affect in script-led theatre alongside other theatre practices, and (b) the specific context of 21st-century Britain. Turning to playwright’s theatre or new writing, the volume seeks to identify the ways in which affect is part of the poetics of the texts and how performance brings about (these and other) affective structures.
The seminar will give students introductory insights into major examples of affect theory and, then, exemplify affective structures such as "happiness", "disgust", "empathy", "hope", "despair" and their material force in a critical analysis of the following plays:
- Martin Crimp, In the Republic of Happiness.
- Lucy Kirkwood, The Children.
- Zinnie Harris, How to Hold Your Breath.
- Mike Bartlett, Game.
- Tim Crouch/Andy Smith, What Happened to the Hope at the End of the Evening.
Theoretical material and all the plays/playscripts will be made available online for the participants of the seminar.
