"As a woman I have no country. As a woman I want no country. As a woman my country is the whole world."-Virginia Woolf
"Who run the world?- Girls." Beyoncé
This course questions the specific link between "country" and "womanhood" by taking a diachronic and political look at feminisms in North America. Starting with the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention and its Declaration of Sentiments and extending to case studies such as Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in the election season of 2019/2020, we will discuss questions of body, voice, and political participation involved in feminist campaigns. The reading list pairs feminist texts with literary texts and contributions from cultural studies.
In the course of term, we will look at the different feminist interventions that characterize the waves-model and ask questions such as: in 2019, have we arrived at the fourth wave or rather in a postfeminist era? What subjectivities and voices have been overlooked by the different waves? What genres are used to articulate feminist message? How does contemporary popular culture use "feminism" for self-marketing--see "Beyoncé-feminsim".
