Kommentar/Beschreibung

This course will serve as an introduction to some contemporary debates in environmental philosophy. After a brief historical introduction and background, we will explore some of the main open questions in the current debate. We will address a range of ethical and aesthetic questions about natural and cultural landscapes. Some of the questions include: How should we understand the value of nature? Is scientific or cultural knowledge relevant to the aesthetic experience of nature? Does natural beauty have a role to play in shaping environmental preservation? When we aim to preserve an ecosystem, what exactly are we (or should we) aiming to preserve? These will be the guiding questions for our investigations, in the context of wilderness, but also gardens, and cultural landscapes.
The students will be asked to make short presentations of selected texts (all available on the seminar website) and to prepare for discussion. The seminar texts will be in English. The schedule is open to amendment depending on students’ preferences and interests
