Meaning is everywhere in language – it resides in individual words, in idioms and in sentences. Meaning can be of various kinds: denotational or connotational, literal or transferred, direct or indirect, general or specific, clear or vague, ambiguous or unambiguous etc. Meanings are found both in the mind and in the dictionary. Meaning(s) can be creatively exploited and played with, e.g. in puns. Issues like the above are dealt with by (lexical) semantics and by pragmatics. In this lecture we will survey major approaches from semantics explaining what meaning is, how we create meaning and how we understand other people’s meaning.
