Course description

In historical perspective, democracy and diversity have been in a tense relationship. The making of liberal western democracies was marked by an understanding of political equality that was often hardly compatible with cultural diversity. Over the last decades, this understanding has gradually changed not only in theoretical debates, but also, albeit to a lesser extent, in political practice. The course will focus on both theoretical approaches and institutional responses to the rise of complex diversity, i.e. a diversity that is caused by the mobilization of different groups (such as immigrants, ethnic minorities, indigenous groups, and minority nations) and the interlocking of their demands in a context of increasing transnationalism. A variety of political strategies vis-à-vis different layers of diversity will be assessed on a comparative basis, the main examples being taken from the context of European and North American democracies, which does not exclude, however, looking into areas such as Latin America and South Asia.

Language policy

The course will give non-native speakers the opportunity to practice their English in a social science context at the University of Augsburg. While sessions should mainly be held in English, the written course work can be done both in English and in German. A good passive command of German on the side of exchange students is recommended.
