Postmodernism is a diverse and multi-faceted literary and cultural phenomenon and at the same time a hotly contested term. In this seminar we will try to delineate some of the central notions and ideas surrounding postmodernism and its manifestations in fiction and culture. Postmodern texts are typically associated with innovation and radical formal experiment. Such texts often show an ironic detachment, self-reflexivity and a sceptical attitude towards realism. Together we will focus on some of the theoretical and philosophical foundations of postmodernism and discuss them in depth. We will then compare these theoretical perspectives with examples from literature and cultural practice (architecture, film, TV, …). Lastly, we will ask the question of whether or not postmodernism is by now ‘over’ and if so, what comes next. What, if not postmodernism, is the cultural (and theoretical) disposition of the early 21st century? How do, for example, changes in the ways we interact with media impact on literature and culture today?
Reading list: tba. Theoretical texts will be made available on digicampus, but students will have to get hold of primary literature themselves.
