Kommentar/Beschreibung

Historical fiction asks us to imagine the past by different means; historiographic metafiction – as Linda Hutcheon has called it – and its parodistic and intertexual approach also asks us to reflect upon how history is written, including upon the ethics of historiogrpahy. In this bloc seminar, we will investigate the notion of historical fiction as well as historiographic metafiction in the American and Canadian context and pay particular attention to how the genre is used to retell history from marginalized perspectives. Our two textual examples will be very recent in publication, and both address historical events of the mid-20th century: Anishinaabe author Louise Erdrich’s prizewinning The Night Watchman (2020) and Chinese Canadian author Larissa Lai’s The Lost Century (2022). Larissa Lai will join the class for a period to discuss her novel.
The course will meet four times across the semester: for an introductory session on Thursday, April 25, 5.30 – 7pm (via zoom); on June 8 (Saturday, 9 pm to 6 pm) and 9 (Sunday, 9.30 am to 1.30 pm). On June 17, 5.30 to approx. 20.00, we will meet with Larissa Lai (first as a class and then as participants in her public reading); the final date (3 h) in July (mandatory for all students wishing to gain credit in the class) will be reserved for the presentation to student term paper topic; we will determine this date in our introductory session.
Students are asked to get a copy of both Erdrich’s The Night Watchman and Lai’s The Lost Century.

Diese Veranstaltung gehört zum Anmeldeset "Beschränkte Teilnehmendenanzahl: Recent Historical Fiction".

Studierende der Anglistik/Amerikanistik und des Faches Englisch können sich bereits während der vorgezogenen Anmeldephase zur Sicherstellung des Studienfortschritts für die Aufbau- und Vertiefungsmodule anmelden. Hierzu wird ein gewisses Kontingent der Kursplätze im Zeitraum vom 19.02.2024 bis 28.02.2024 für die Anmeldung geöffnet. Die Verteilung der Plätze erfolgt am 01.03.2024. Bitte beachten Sie, dass in dieser Anmeldephase Studierende in höheren Fachsemestern bei der Verteilung der Plätze priorisiert werden.
Die allgemeine Anmeldephase beginnt am 04.03.2024 und endet am 08.04.2024.
Folgende Regeln gelten für die Anmeldung:

Es wird eine festgelegte Anzahl von Plätzen in den Veranstaltungen verteilt.
Die Plätze in den betreffenden Veranstaltungen wurden am 10.04.2024 um 12:00 verteilt. Weitere Plätze werden evtl. über Wartelisten zur Verfügung gestellt.
Die Anmeldung ist möglich von 04.03.2024, 08:00 bis 08.04.2024, 12:00.
