Museums are places of organized memory: the items they collect, and display, are important elements of collective remembering – and of the power asymmetries that order such remembering. For critic Benedict Anderson, the museum is one of three central institutions of power that “profoundly shaped the way in which the colonial state imagined its dominion—the nature of the human beings it ruled, the geography of its domain, and the legitimacy of its ancestry” (1991, 163). In the North American context, museums played a crucial role in the narrative of the “vanishing Indian,” the notion of the seemingly inevitable disappearance of Native American cultures in the course of national ‘progress’, and the attempt to ‘preserve’ material reminders of those cultures.
Thus, while contemporary museums are clearly changing and reflecting upon their role in colonization processes, as institutions deeply embedded in colonial history, they are subject to critical scrutiny not only in scholarly discourses, but also in Indigenous literatures. “Those anthropologists invented us, and then they put our bones in these museum cases,” observes Harold, the trickster protagonist in Anishinaabe author Gerald Vizenor’s screenplay “Harold of Orange”. In this class, we will look at texts by Indigenous authors from the 1980s onwards that question museums and the underlying logics and ethics of museum cultures –often playful and humorous, at times scathingly so. Our material consists of texts from a range of genres, including drama, poetry, short stories, comics, and a novel. Students are asked to buy a copy of Angeline Boulley's novel Warrior Girl Unearthed. All other literary and critical materials will be provided on Digicampus. For students taking this class for module EAS-1844/ EAS-1914, taking this class in conjunction with the Übung “Exhibiting Indigenous Worlds” is strongly recommended.

Diese Veranstaltung gehört zum Anmeldeset "Beschränkte Teilnehmendenanzahl: “National Monuments” and Human Remains: The Museum in Indigenous Literatures".

Studierende der Anglistik/Amerikanistik und des Faches Englisch können sich bereits während der vorgezogenen Anmeldephase zur Sicherstellung des Studienfortschritts für die Aufbau- und Vertiefungsmodule anmelden. Hierzu wird ein gewisses Kontingent der Kursplätze im Zeitraum vom 19.02.2024 bis 28.02.2024 für die Anmeldung geöffnet. Die Verteilung der Plätze erfolgt am 01.03.2024. Bitte beachten Sie, dass in dieser Anmeldephase Studierende in höheren Fachsemestern bei der Verteilung der Plätze priorisiert werden.
Folgende Regeln gelten für die Anmeldung:

Die Anmeldung ist möglich von 04.03.2024, 08:00 bis 08.04.2024, 12:00.
Es wird eine festgelegte Anzahl von Plätzen in den Veranstaltungen verteilt.
