What do we need theory for and how does it help us understand literature and other cultural practices? This Übung supplements the seminar ‘Theories and Methods’; while the seminar is focused on theoretical texts that have had an impact on literary and cultural studies but that largely do not explicitly deal with literature, this Übung looks more specifically at theoretical approaches to literature. It will draw on some of the theoretical frameworks also covered in the seminar, but look more specifically at their analytical application to literature. As our ‘test case’ for different approaches, we will work with the novel Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (2014).
This class will be taught in a hybrid format, combining synchronous and asynchronous digital elements with on-site meetings. The extent of the latter will depend on pandemic-related regulations. We will discuss the details of course logistics in our first meeting, which will take place via zoom.
