In this course foundational methods and tools for literary analysis will be discussed and applied focusing on narratives of Detective Fiction. Special emphasis is given to analyses derived from New Historicism. In this way, the texts’ formal and stylistic dimensions will be assessed, while we also turn to contemporaneous social and political contexts in order to further investigate questions of representation.
Participating student are required to read/watch the following texts before class commences:
• Green, Anne Katherine. The Leavenworth Case. 1878. Penguin, 2010. (352 pages)
• Scorsese, Martin., et al. Shutter Island. Paramount Home Entertainment, 2010.
• two of the following short stories by Edgar Allen Poe (all available through https://poestories.com/stories.php):
o “The Murders in the Rue Morgue.” (1841)
o “The Mystery of Marie Roget” (1842)
o “The Tell-Tale Heart“ (1843)
o “The Purloined Letter” (1844)
Please bring physical copies of the Green and Poe texts to class.
