Comment/Description

Why do we still study Shakespeare? What are the similarities between poetry and rap songs? How are literary theories and literature relevant today, when books bleed into movies, TV shows and video games? This seminar aims to examine aspects of ‘hardcore’ literature, such as the iambic pentameter, or serialised storytelling from the Victorian Age, and undertake a compare-and-contrast approach by pitching these aspects against products of popular culture. At the end of this course, participants will find themselves equipped with the ability to apply tools of various literary and cultural theories in a ‘custom template’ to analyse contemporary and not-so-contemporary cultural practices.
