The module aims to introduce participants to theoretical concepts and principles of geoinformation systems and cartographic techniques. The participants will explore and understand theoretical concepts of geospatial data acquisition, handling, visualization and representation, and dissemination in print and online data formats/platforms. GIS and cartography have been increasingly applied across a wide range of disciplines and sectors, for example, infrastructure and planning, health and social sciences, population and demography, environmental and agricultural sciences, security, and surveillance, among others. The module will integrate lectures and a series of practical exercises covering different topics. Participants will work with geographical datasets using the ArcGIS Pro software and QGIS. Data exploration, manipulation and visualisation will also be conducted using the R/R studio statistical softwares. Exercises will include • Exploring acquiring of geographic data for GIS mapping • Map compilation and design • Statistical mapping • Symbology and working with visual variables • Multi-variate diagrams • Interactive mapping At the end of each topic/exercise, the course participants should independently implement a cartographic project. The final product will be a static map printed in A4 size. The map should be accompanied by a summary report describing the datasets, processing workflow and other related metadata. |
