This course explores various pragmatic phenomena through a cross-cultural lens, looking at how their realisations differ across languages and cultures. We will look at types of speech acts, politeness phenomena, and discourse phenomena (among others). The course is structured as a mix of theoretical and empirical pragmatics in that each topic will be examined both theoretically and empirically. Regarding the latter, one or more empirical papers will be read and discussed for each topic, which will also help us gain an insight into the different methodologies employed in the field.
