In this seminar, we will track the progress children make when learning their mother tongue. In doing this, we will go through the individual stages of phonological, semantic and syntactic development; we will see how children start babbling, build up their lexicon starting with their first words, assign meaning to these words, and ultimately build more and more complex sentences. In addition, we will take a glimpse at various issues surrounding the topic of language acquisition, as well as experimental methods used in investigating language acquisition. One of the main foci will be pragmatic development, which we will focus on in the second half of the course. We will see how children compute metaphors, irony, and implicature, and see why it is that they struggle with some context-dependent phenomena more than with others.
