Languages are changing all the time on all linguistic levels – or rather: are being changed more or less subconsciously by their speakers. Change is both based on and produces variation in the language at any given stage. This lecture will deal with common processes, theories and models of change, such as S-curve diffusions, grammaticalization or the inferencing theory of semantic change, which try to systematize and explain the conditions, motivations, processes and outputs of linguistic developments. The various approaches will be illustrated by past and presently ongoing changes in English.
