James Joyce’s Ulysses (1922) is often described as the quintessential modernist novel, a text that redefines narrative, subjectivity, and the very form of literature. Set in Dublin on a single day—16 June 1904, now commemorated as “Bloomsday”—it follows the wanderings of Leopold Bloom, Stephen Dedalus, and, in the final chapter, Molly Bloom. The novel’s ambition is encyclopedic: to encapsulate the textures of modern life in all their banality, intimacy, and transcendence.
Joyce experiments radically with language, style, and structure. Each of the eighteen episodes adopts a distinctive narrative technique, ranging from stream of consciousness and free indirect discourse to parodic pastiche and hallucinatory drama. The effect is both disorienting and exhilarating: the novel becomes a laboratory of literary form. In doing so, Ulysses foregrounds the act of narration itself, raising questions about how stories are told and how meaning is made.
By paralleling Homer’s Odyssey, Joyce elevates ordinary Dublin life into the realm of myth. Bloom becomes an unlikely Odysseus, and Molly Bloom a Penelope, but the mythological framework often functions ironically, highlighting the gap between the epic and the quotidian. Aesthetically, the novel revolutionizes how literature represents interior life. Its stream of consciousness captures the fluid, fragmentary quality of thought, desire, and memory. Unlike many earlier literary traditions that privilege spirit or intellect, Joyce foregrounds the body—its appetites, sensations, and vulnerabilities. Eating, sex, and bodily functions are not just present but central, making Ulysses both scandalous and groundbreaking. And, finally, Dublin is not a backdrop but a character in its own right. Streets, pubs, advertisements, and sounds create a textual urban fabric, anchoring the narrative in the rhythms of modern life. Bloom’s Jewish identity sets him apart in Catholic Dublin, inviting reflection on exclusion, prejudice, and the ethics of hospitality. His wandering becomes a meditation on belonging and estrangement.

THE SEMINAR WILL GIVE THE NOVEL A CLOSE READING – one or two episodes per seminar – and will give the students a chance to read and study the novel in a joint effort through the semester.

Diese Veranstaltung gehört zum Anmeldeset "ALW/ELW/NELK: Vertiefungsmodul BA: HS".
Studierende der Anglistik/Amerikanistik und des Faches Englisch können sich bereits während der vorgezogenen Anmeldephase zur Sicherstellung des Studienfortschritts für die Aufbau- und Vertiefungsmodule anmelden. Hierzu wird ein gewisses Kontingent der Kursplätze im Zeitraum vom 11.08.2025 bis 27.08.2025 für die Anmeldung geöffnet. Die Verteilung der Plätze erfolgt am 29.08.2025 um 12 Uhr. Bitte beachten Sie, dass in dieser Anmeldephase Studierende in höheren Fachsemestern bei der Verteilung der Plätze priorisiert werden.
Die allgemeine Anmeldephase beginnt am 02.09.2025 und endet am 06.10.2025.
Folgende Regeln gelten für die Anmeldung:

    Die Anmeldung zu maximal 2 Veranstaltungen des Anmeldesets ist erlaubt.
  • Folgende Personenkreise werden bei der Platzverteilung bevorzugt:
    • Abschluss ist Bachelor of Arts (Hauptfach) (2634 Personen)
  • Es wird eine festgelegte Anzahl von Plätzen in den Veranstaltungen verteilt.
    Die Plätze in den betreffenden Veranstaltungen wurden am 08.10.2025 um 12:00 verteilt. Weitere Plätze werden evtl. über Wartelisten zur Verfügung gestellt.
