Lernorganisation HYBRID COURSE:
This course is planned as a hybrid course. What this means concretely, we don't know yet. The state of Bavaria is currently planning to have courses meet mostly in person on campus - we will see what the concrete plans are for Augsburg University in the coming weeks. In any case, if you are unable to be on campus you will not be excluded from the course.
Leistungsnachweis In order to receive credit points for the module, you will need to write a term paper.
You will be expected to take on the role of a session-expert for a session (meaning you dig a little deeper than everyone else in preparation for the session and you prepare discussion questions / text excerpts to discuss together) and to hand in an outline for your term paper as a prerequisite for writing the term paper.
Online/Digitale Veranstaltung Veranstaltung wird als Hybrid/gemischt abgehalten.

Kommentar/Beschreibung

Queer theory and subsequently the field of queer studies developed in the 1990s out of gay and lesbian and feminist studies and political activism in the context of the AIDS crisis. This course aims to offer an introduction to some of the historical and contemporary theoretical debates that shaped and continue to shape the interdisciplinary field of queer studies in a North American context.

In this course we will approach queer theory from an intersectional perspective –
meaning that we will discuss questions of sexuality, desire, gender-expression etc. as they intersect with other questions concerning identity, norms, and social structures, including, race, class, and age.

The course welcomes students with previous experience in gender and queer theory as well as students new to the field. You should bring a willingness to engage with complex theoretical texts. We will also bring the theoretical texts in touch with queer representations in fiction and possibly film (time permitting), and ways in which concepts and approaches from queer theory can offer productive tools to approach those texts/media.
