How can poetry react to rising sea levels, droughts and sea birds starving with stomachs full of plastic, to widespread toxic pollution and the sixth mass extinction? In other words, how can poetry not only show the beautiful bird as it so often does, but also “the bulldozer off to the side that (is) destroying the bird’s habitat“? (Juliana Spahr)
In this introductionary course we’ll explore poetry that is ecologically minded, environmentally oriented and attuned to the more-than-human world.
The poetries we will read span across the last 50 or so years, tackle environmental themes and were written by a diverse group of poets. For practical reasons we will focus mainly on poets based in North-America. We will read a few key theoretical texts (guiding questions will be given) but otherwise focus on reading and discussing poems. We will look at the evolution of ecopoetry, from nature poetry to environmental poetry to ecological poetry/ecopoetry, and read poems that illustrate this development. We will also explore key themes and topics of contemporary ecopoetics: the problematic idea of nature as a place of solace, of consolation and transcendence, the Anthropocene as a concept and how poets work with it, dreams about wilderness and “untouched“ nature, climate grief and toxic pollution. Other sessions will be spent on exploring queer, indigenous and black ecopoetics. In addition to the content, we will analyze the formal strategies that the poets implore.
Mid-semester we will have a guest poet from the UK join the course, Maria Sledgmere, who will be reading a few poems and discuss her writing process.
At the end of the semester this course should give you the tools to read poems with confidence and analyze what they do and how they do this (without spoiling all the magic, of course). Throughout the course writing prompts will be given to those students who like to creatively explore poetry themselves. The creative assignments are not going to be graded. Assessment will be based on a portfolio you will be putting together over the semester.
