Kommentar/Beschreibung

The autobiographical I rarely tells only its own story. Along similar lines of what Michail Bakhtin has described as the novel’s polyphony, recent scholarship on life writing tends to understand the autobiographical genre as relational, a genre, in which different ‘voices’ speak. Via the category of the ‘voice’, we will connect stylistic and narratological approaches and look at autobiographical texts as webs of (family) relations, in sociological contexts, as well as with regard to multilingualism and translation.
This seminar will be taught across linguistic, disciplinary, and university boundaries by Prof. Lut Missinne (University of Muenster, Dutch Studies), Prof. Katja Sarkowsky (Augsburg University, American Studies), and Prof. Martina Wagner-Egelhaaf (University of Muenster, German Studies). We will look at the following autobiographical texts: Sally Morgan, My Place (1987), Stefan Hertmans, Oorlog en terpentiijn (2013; War and Turpentine) und Saša Stanišić, Herkunft (2019; Where You Come From). Students are free to read these texts either in the original or in translation (with the exception of Sally Morgan’s text; Augsburg students are expected to read this text in English); the problems of translation will be explicitly addressed in this class.
This is a biweekly class which will be complemented by a student conference in a block session at the end of the semester (Feb 11 and 12, 2022). Beginning on October 18, the class will meet in its entirety via zoom every four weeks; depending on the pandemic developments and the size of the Augsburg group, the in-between sessions in Augsburg will take place either on site or via zoom as well (for details on the dates, please see the ‘Ablaufplan’). As our shared platform for materials, we will use the Muenster-based BSCW platform; access will be available to Augsburg students by the beginning of the semester, and we will use Digicampus to complement BSCW for internal communication and exchange of materials.

The joint sessions will be conducted in English and German, the Augsburg sessions will be exclusively taught in English. Students of all disciplinary backgrounds are expected to be open to the dynamics of ‘passive multilingualism’ and the pleasures of being lost in translation once in a while!

Students are asked to please purchase the three autobiographical texts we’ll focus on, that is, Sally Morgan’s My Place (1987), Stefan Hertmans’ Oorlog en terpentiijn (2013; War and Turpentine) und Saša Stanišić’s Herkunft (2019; Where You Come From)
