In principle, the course will be held in English. However, should only German speakers be present, the course will be held in German instead. Nevertheless, ability and willingness to engage with the English reading material is required.
We will cover a number of controversial issues. Openness to dialogue and to understanding of others are a must in class, despite any particular stance or view.

In this day and age, it is evident that conflict and particularly its violent forms continue to remain a challenge, in communities, societies, and at the international level. This course will explore the practise of conflict resolution and reflect how it has been shaped by various academic disciplines, including psychology, sociology, political science, economics, and anthropology. This will provide insights into the potential for nonviolent conflict resolution.
Main questions are:
- What are the theories of conflict that have shaped major practises of conflict resolution?
- What are some major approaches to resolve conflict? What are opportunities and limitations of these approaches?
Students will get the opportunity to apply the theories of this course to deepen their understanding of specific current or historical conflicts. Students will also have the chance to experience some major approaches to resolving conflict and reflect on their personal engagement with these.
