Comment/Description

The goal of this seminar is to examine the most important approaches to discourse and their application to English data. On the one hand, we will discuss text-linguistic methodologies, conversation-analytic methodologies and discourse-pragmatic methodologies. On the other, we are going to apply their most important building blocks to spoken discourse, written discourse and computer-mediated discourse. Particular attention is given to how these ‘building blocks’ can be identified, and which functions they may fulfil in naturally occurring discourse.
