Kommentar/Beschreibung

In this class we will trace back the roots of the English language
starting with its genealogical origins as an Indo-European
and Germanic language, and then describe its development
through the major periods of Old, Middle and Early Modern English
up to Modern Day English.
All the major linguistic levels such as phonetics/phonology, morphology,
syntax and lexicon will be investigated by means of the bascic methods
and principles of Historical Linguistics, but also by analyzing original texts.
We will also take into consideration which external influences (e.g. Viking invasions,
Norman conquest) both contributed to and caused the specific changes the English
language underwent.

[MA EAS] This is a companion course to the seminar "Language Change in English" (MA EAS, Theories & Methods or MA ANIS EAS-2988, 1+2). It likewise serves as companion course for a series of ANIS seminars (consult your module handbook).

Studierende der Anglistik/Amerikanistik und des Faches Englisch können sich bereits während der vorgezogenen Anmeldephase zur Sicherstellung des Studienfortschritts für die Aufbau- und Vertiefungsmodule anmelden. Hierzu wird ein gewisses Kontingent der Kursplätze im Zeitraum vom 24.02.2025 bis 05.03.2025 für die Anmeldung geöffnet. Die Verteilung der Plätze erfolgt am 07.03.2025. Bitte beachten Sie, dass in dieser Anmeldephase Studierende in höheren Fachsemestern bei der Verteilung der Plätze priorisiert werden.
Die allgemeine Anmeldephase beginnt am 10.03.2025 und endet am 14.04.2025.

Students of English and American Studies, as well as those studying English within a teacher-training degree, can register for the advanced and specialization modules during the early registration phase to ensure their academic progress. A certain quota of course places will be made available for registration from the 24th of February , 2025, to the 5th of March, 2025. The allocation of places will take place on the 7th of March, 2025. Please note that during this registration phase, students in higher semesters and M.A. students will be given priority in the allocation process.
The general registration phase begins on the 10th of March, 2025, and ends on the 14th of April, 2025.
Folgende Regeln gelten für die Anmeldung:
  • Diese Regel gilt von 10.03.2025 12:00 bis 14.04.2025 12:00.
    Die Anmeldung zu maximal 2 Veranstaltungen des Anmeldesets ist erlaubt.
  • Die Anmeldung ist möglich von 10.03.2025, 12:00 bis 14.04.2025, 12:00.
  • Folgende Personenkreise werden bei der Platzverteilung bevorzugt:
    • Abschluss ist Master of Arts (1136 Personen)
  • Es wird eine festgelegte Anzahl von Plätzen in den Veranstaltungen verteilt.
    Die Plätze in den betreffenden Veranstaltungen wurden am 16.04.2025 um 12:00 verteilt. Weitere Plätze werden evtl. über Wartelisten zur Verfügung gestellt.
