Comment/Description

Already in antiquity, philosophers noticed a deep connection between creativity and melancholia (an observation famously attributed to Aristotle). The Romantic period turns out to be of particular interest in this regard, as its highly imaginative, creative cultural output goes along with a strong sense of loss and a melancholic mood. In this seminar, we will explore the phenomenon of melancholia in selected poetry of the Romantic period. After a comprehensive survey of the history of melancholia and its numerous theories/discourses, we will contextualize the phenomenon within the socio-cultural background of Romanticism, as well as scrutinize its discursive and aesthetic manifestations in various Romantic texts, including Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner,” William Wordsworth’s Lucy poems, Lord Byron’s “Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage,” and John Keats’s famous odes.

A reader with assorted primary and secondary literature will be made available at the beginning of the term.
