Allgemeine Informationen

Veranstaltungsname Vorlesung: Method Course: Tools for Scientific Computing
Semester SS 2022
Aktuelle Anzahl der Teilnehmenden 9
erwartete Teilnehmendenanzahl 6
Heimat-Einrichtung Lehrstuhl für Theoretische Physik III
beteiligte Einrichtungen Lehrstuhl für Theoretische Physik I
Veranstaltungstyp Vorlesung in der Kategorie Lehre
Erster Termin Montag, 25.04.2022 08:15 - 09:45, Ort: (S-448)
Teilnehmende This method course is intended for master students of physics and materials science. Students in other programs can be admitted as long as the maximum number of 12 participants is not exceeded.

Initially, 6 places will be reserved for master students of physics and materials science each. Physics students should register for the method course on this page below while the places for students of materials science will be distributed in a special session in the week before the summer term begins. If you are interested in participating in the method course and all places seem to be taken, please make sure to let us know so that we can see whether we can fit you in.
Voraussetzungen Students are expected to have programming experience, preferably in Python which will be used as a programming language in this method course. The module PHM-0243 "Einführung in Prinzpien der Programmierung" offered in the bachelor programme Materials Science and Engineering provides a good basis. Students with programming experience in another language than Python can familiarize themselves with Python, e.g., by reading the lecture notes for "Einführung in Prinzipien der Programmierung" available at gertingold.github.io.
Lernorganisation The method course will consist of lectures and a practical part. The lectures will provide an introduction to various tools and techniques used in scientific computing. These techniques will we applied in the practical course where students team up in small groups to work on programming problems.
Leistungsnachweis The requirement for credit points is based on a scientific programming project carried out in a small team of 2-3 students. The work will be judged on the basis of a joint final report and the contributions of the individual students as documented in the team's Gitlab project. The final report should contain an explanation of the scientific problem and its numerical implementation as well as a presentation of results. The code should be appropriately documented and tested.

Kommentar/Beschreibung

In this method course, important tools and techniques used in scientific computing will be taught in the lecture part and applied in pratical course. The topics discussed include the use of version control systems, testing, profiling, and documentation of programs as well as the use of libraries for numerical work and graphical representation of results. Additional topics can be discussed depending on the interests of the participants.
