According to the UNHCR, 82,4 million people are forcibly displaced worldwide (http://www.unhcr.org/figures-at-a-glance.html).
But what does it mean to be forcibly displaced? What are the differences between stateless and internally displaced persons and refugees? What are their rights? How is ‘refugeeness’ related to personal identity? What are commonalities between seemingly different groups? And how can flight be depicted in literature aesthetically and on a content-level?
In the context of these and other questions, we will look at philosophical and theoretical texts within Refugee and Migration Studies. Politically and legally, we will consider national laws as well as the Geneva Convention and definitions by the UNHCR, always also asking questions of basic human rights and ethical responsibility.
The North American continent will be a focal point, but at the same time we will be thinking about the productivity and complexities of transnational debates.
With this theoretical framework, we will consider narrative texts from various genres and supplement our readings with other cultural production, like photography or film – at times on a voluntary basis.
All students are expected to have read all the primary texts as well as the other source material in preparation for the sessions. A final reading list of texts that need to be acquired will be announced in the beginning of the seminar.
