Contemporary American Short Stories

“When you read a short story, you come out a little more aware and a little more in love with the world around you.” George Saunders
This seminar offers an in-depth exploration of contemporary American short stories, highlighting the diversity of voices and styles that define modern American literature. This course will delve into the rich landscape of contemporary narratives, examining the works of prominent and emerging American writers. Participants will gain an overview of the historical development of the American short story with a study of classic texts by foundational authors. This includes an analysis of the defining characteristics and evolution of the short story in American literature. The main focus will be the transition to contemporary texts and a discussion how the short story genre has transformed to reflect contemporary themes and issues. The course outline will therefore include an introduction to the American short story genre, its transition to contemporary texts, exploring contemporary voices, diverse styles, genres, and cultural perspectives. Themes may include identity, environmental issues, migration, gender and the human condition in general. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the historical and contemporary landscape of American short stories and will be able to critically analyze and discuss the works of contemporary American writers as well as gain insight into the diverse cultural and social contexts influencing contemporary American literature.

Diese Veranstaltung gehört zum Anmeldeset "Zeitgesteuerte Anmeldung: Ü: Survey III: Romanticism and the Victorian Age".

Studierende der Anglistik/Amerikanistik und des Faches Englisch können sich bereits während der vorgezogenen Anmeldephase zur Sicherstellung des Studienfortschritts für die Aufbau- und Vertiefungsmodule anmelden. Hierzu wird ein gewisses Kontingent der Kursplätze im Zeitraum vom 12.08.2024 bis 28.08.2024 für die Anmeldung geöffnet. Die Verteilung der Plätze erfolgt am 30.08.2024. Bitte beachten Sie, dass in dieser Anmeldephase Studierende in höheren Fachsemestern bei der Verteilung der Plätze priorisiert werden.
Die allgemeine Anmeldephase beginnt am 02.09.2024 und endet am 07.10.2024.
Folgende Regeln gelten für die Anmeldung:

Es wird eine festgelegte Anzahl von Plätzen in den Veranstaltungen verteilt.
Die Plätze in den betreffenden Veranstaltungen werden am 09.10.2024 um 12:00 verteilt.
Diese Regel gilt von 02.09.2024 08:00 bis 07.10.2024 12:00.
Die Anmeldung zu maximal 2 Veranstaltungen des Anmeldesets ist erlaubt.
Folgende Personenkreise werden bei der Platzverteilung bevorzugt:
- Abschluss ist Master of Arts (1100 Personen)
Die Anmeldung ist möglich von 02.09.2024, 08:00 bis 07.10.2024, 12:00.
