Voraussetzungen Please be aware that this course will be reading intensive since we will read several works by Baldwin + additional academic texts about his work and possibly a few shorter texts by other relevant authors as well.
Leistungsnachweis o receive credit in this course you will complete a term paper (length will depend on your specific module requirements)
Additionally, in the course you will take over 1-2 smaller tasks as part of the course.

In this course we will read and discuss various works of author James Baldwin (1924-1987) and the many larger topics his writing speaks to so powerfully, such as justice, power, race, sexuality, violence, exile, and American society.

Baldwin is one of the most crucial American authors of the 20th century and his contemporary relevance for current times is shown by the frequency with which interviews resurface and quotes from his work are circulated. Raoul Peck's 2016 documentary illustrated various connections between the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, the forms of oppression Baldwin criticized in writing and in person throughout his life, and the Black Lives Matter Protests of the 2010s. How works remain highly relevant today.

We will read and discuss a number of fiction and non-fiction texts by Baldwin, such as Another Country, Giovanni’s Room, and The Fire Next Time and consider them in the diverse historical and theoretical contexts in which they are relevant, such as The Harlem Renaissance, The Civil Rights Movement, Racism, Homophobia, Intersectionality …

Anmelderegeln

Diese Veranstaltung gehört zum Anmeldeset "Zeitgesteuerte Anmeldung: Baldwin in Context/ MA".
Studierende der Anglistik/Amerikanistik und des Faches Englisch können sich bereits während der vorgezogenen Anmeldephase zur Sicherstellung des Studienfortschritts für die Aufbau- und Vertiefungsmodule anmelden. Hierzu wird ein gewisses Kontingent der Kursplätze im Zeitraum vom 11.08.2025 bis 27.08.2025 für die Anmeldung geöffnet. Die Verteilung der Plätze erfolgt am 29.08.2025 um 12 Uhr. Bitte beachten Sie, dass in dieser Anmeldephase Studierende in höheren Fachsemestern bei der Verteilung der Plätze priorisiert werden.
Die allgemeine Anmeldephase beginnt am 02.09.2025 und endet am 06.10.2025.
Folgende Regeln gelten für die Anmeldung:
  • Die Anmeldung ist möglich von 02.09.2025, 08:00 bis 06.10.2025, 12:00.
  • Folgende Personenkreise werden bei der Platzverteilung bevorzugt:
    • Abschluss ist Master of Arts (1136 Personen)
  • Es wird eine festgelegte Anzahl von Plätzen in den Veranstaltungen verteilt.
    Die Plätze in den betreffenden Veranstaltungen wurden am 08.10.2025 um 12:00 verteilt. Weitere Plätze werden evtl. über Wartelisten zur Verfügung gestellt.
