Comment/Description

The seminar will explore the question of what contribution to ethics literature makes in a way that is unique to it. We shall reflect on central epistemes of ethics, but but the focus will be on the special intrinsic value that literature can bring to the reflection and, at the same time, the aesthetic con- and reconfiguration of the ethical in text and context.

We shall concentrate on structural features underlying literary ethics, such as "value judgement", "responsibility", "empathy/sympathy", "vulnerability", "universality/particularity", "plurality/singularity", "dialogue/dialogicity", "fiction/lie", etc., on which theoretical problem horizons will be determined.

Seminar work will turn to a close reading of literary texts and, in this, reflect on ethical practice according to "morality," "welfare," "equality," "alterity," "autonomy," "environment," and to determine formal/structural/textual consequences.

We shall study the following literary examples:

Ian McEwan, Saturday (2005);
Kazuo Ishiguro, Never Let Me Go (2005);
debbie tucker green, truth and reconciliation (2011);
David Greig, The Events (2013);
Sally Rooney, Normal People; (2018).

The texts by Greig and tucker green will be provided for the participants. The novels are available in paperback editions for textual work.
