Gothic literature – also depicted as Dark Romanticism - is a facinating genre which comprises mystery and suspense, a distinct dark atmosphere and setting, supernatural elements, eerie existences between death and life as well as psychological spheres of fear, terror and horror. The uncanny Gothic literary genre, as we know it, was established in the European culture of the late 18th century, yet its ongoing fascinating influence now merges various cultural backgrounds. The subgenre of the American "Southern Gothic" will be the focus of this course. Shaped by U.S.-American literary and political history of the American South, this genre not only displays Gothic genre conventions but also includes distinct features that shaped the region, its politics, history and cultures.
Apart from analyzing canonized works of literature by William Faulkner, Toni Morrison, and other classic literary works, we will discover contemporary variations and decipher the Gothic genre narrational conventions and strategies in movies and television productions.
