Comment/Description

Nation-building, westward expansion, the displacement and genocide of Indigenous peoples, the struggle over the abolition of slavery, immigration, industrialization, women’s rights – the 19th century in the United States saw a number of the central political, economic, and cultural processes that shape the country until today. 19th century American literature does not only reflect upon and respond to such dynamics, as integral to the nation’s cultural imaginary it is also instrumental to them.
In this class, we will look at a range of fictional and some non-fictional texts relating to these cultural and social dynamics; our readings will include well- and lesser-known texts and authors from different backgrounds. This class is meant as both an overview and selective in-depth study of 19th century American texts. Since it is conceptualized in conjunction with a supplementary ‘Übung’ on narrative analysis, we will focus exclusively on narrative forms.

Please get a copy of Frederick Douglass’ Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave (1845) and of Sophia Alice Callahan’s Wynema, a Child of the Forest (1891). All other texts will be provided on Digicampus.
