Comment/Description

Magical realism is a literary genre that illustrates a realistic vision of the world undercut by elements of magic. The aim of this course is to examine the origins and the development of magical realism from its first definition by Franz Roh (magischer Realismus – magic realism) to the current understanding of the concept. Marked by its playful blending of the fantastic and the real, authorial reticence, and thematic hybridity, magical realism has served as a vehicle for social and cultural commentary. We will examine the most prominent characteristics of the genre and its implications and consider the position of magical realism in the literary landscape of the 21st century.

Students are asked to obtain and read the following novels:
The Ocean at the End of the Lane (2013) by Neil Gaiman
The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (2007) by Junot Diaz

All other course materials will be provided via Digicampus.

For the two-course-modules EAS-1411 and EAS-1414, this PS is to be combined with the Ü “Narrative Analysis: Contemporary Short Fiction” (Corvin Bittner).
