Nowadays, it often seems as if connection to others is much easier achieved than ever before as affordable flights, the internet and social media are readily available. A heightened focus on mindfulness and looking-inward promise a deeper connection to oneself. Why is it then that feelings of loneliness, isolation and disconnection from others, oneself and one’s environment are so prevalent - even before the Covid-crisis?
In this seminar, we will discuss American narratives that deal with those questions of (dis)connection in various ways, both on a thematic and formal level, to see what answers literary texts can provide. We will substantiate our reading with theoretical considerations on (dis)connection.
The reading of all texts on the syllabus is a requirement to complete this seminar successfully. The seminar will be held online, with both synchronous and asynchronous elements.
