In this project-based seminar, we will explore the language of feature films and television series, investigating various aspects of this specific register of the English language, such as...
(a) the difference between film dialogue and face-to-face dialogue or dialogues in fictional prose
(b) the difference between the language spoken by different character types in movies
(c) the difference between different film genres (action vs horror vs comedy)
(d) the difference between movies across time (1950s vs 1970s vs 1990s)
(e) the difference between different screenwriters (Tarantino vs Sorkin vs Mamet)

Introducing students first to the practical use of computer tools that will help them to systematically explore the lexis and syntax of screenplays, students will engage in individual research project in groups of four. Toward the end of the seminar, each group will present the findings of their individual research to each other in short research presentations.

The course is part of admission "ESW/ASW: Vertiefungsmodul BA: HS".
Studierende der Anglistik/Amerikanistik und des Faches Englisch können sich bereits während der vorgezogenen Anmeldephase zur Sicherstellung des Studienfortschritts für die Aufbau- und Vertiefungsmodule anmelden.
