Comment/Description

The expression of feelings and affects is one of the central functions of literature. Across all genres, literary texts, or characters in such texts, express emotions and feelings like joy and despair, love and hatred, anxiety and ennui, or hope and excitement. In this seminar we will focus on how such affects are represented aesthetically – in other words, what forms does feeling take in texts? As simple as this question may seem, its implications are complex: where does feeling reside in the first place? In the author, in the text, in the reader, or somewhere else entirely? Or are there different layers of feeling at work in any literary text (e.g. that of the reader, an affective reaction to a text, and the feelings of a character described in the text)? How is feeling connected to the form it takes in literary representations? Are there specific literary forms that are particularly expressive of a certain feeling (an idea that can be seen in some traditional literary genres, such as elegies as poems of mourning) or is the association of form and feeling a matter of convention at best?
As the primary idea of this seminar is to reflect on different textual capacities in the expression of feeling, we will look at a wide range of texts from different literary periods (early modern to contemporary) and genres (poetry, plays and prose).
A reader with poetry will be made available to all participants. In addition, participants in this course will have to obtain their own copies of the other set texts for this course (texts to be announced).
