Kommentar/Beschreibung

‘Student activity’, ‘active learner’, ‘action-orientation’ – these are just some of the buzzwords that refer to one of the most prominent quality features of a communicative and learner-oriented foreign language classroom. The concept of learner action implies among other things, notions of self-organized, participatory, teacher-independent learning and marks students as 'active doers' rather than 'passive receivers'. Does that mean that teachers are, after all, superfluous? By no means!
Student-action does not appear out of nowhere in our classrooms. It is the teacher’s responsibility to create those conditions and learning arrangements that allow for learner action. In other words, student-action is – more often than not – teacher-initiated. Thus, teachers-to-be need to build up a large repertoire of learner-activating techniques.
In this course, we will dive into various areas of English Language Teaching and explore specific ways of activating learners in the EFL classroom – both in theory and practice. These will include:
- teaching methods,
- forms of cooperative learning,
- task-supported language learning,
- games,
- creative approaches (to writing, for instance),
- differentiation and individualization,
- product- and action-orientation in the literature classroom (including small-l literature and a variety of text types such as songs, shorties, film clips),
- classroom discourse,
- and lesson planning.
Taking a hands-on approach, course participants are given the opportunity to design teaching material and concepts that are, in parts, tried out and discussed in class.
