FOR MA ANIS STUDENTS (EAS-2888): This is a companion course to the seminar "Words in Time"
The aim of this course is to understand, decompose and compare various theories on hidden or implied meanings which have their origin in Paul Grice's seminal work on implicatures. We will discover how "what is meant" can be distinguished from "what is said", how we can systematically capture hidden meanings. On the basis of various influential papers, we will reflect how implicatures, explicatures and other pragmatic concepts can be used to unravel how individuals manipulate or relay secret messages to different addressees in different communicative settings.
The course starts with an in-depth discussion of Grice's original works on meaning and implicatures, which we will apply to various real-life examples. On this basis, we shall then move on to various followers of Grice, who have developed, adapted or invented new theories of meaning, e.g. Neo-Gricean and Post-Gricean research. Finally, we will consider how this "new" type of research has changed what Grice had introduced decades before and how it has influenced recent pragmatic research on humour, irony or (im)politeness. To this end, we will close by exploring and using one of the most important theories of communicative meaning in linguistics today, i.e. relevance theory.
