The course includes the technical implementation and efficient application of advanced geoscientific methods for geoscientific methods for data preparation, analysis and visualisation using the programming environment programming environment ‘R’. The exercises are based on data sets and content-related questions from various areas of geography and geosciences. The topics/modelling exercises that will be covered in the project seminar will include • Crop modelling using the Eco-crop package in R and developing of crop suitability index. • Estimating river discharge using the SWATrunR package model in R. • Estimating soil erosion and sediment yield using the Modified Universal Soil Loss Equation (VFS package in R). • Species distribution models using statistical, machine learning, maxent and boosted regression trees. • Suitability mapping using the Multi-Criteria Decision Approach (MCDA) in R. • Develop predictive models for ecosystem services analysis using machine learning algorithms (Random Forest) After completing the module, students will also be able to analyse complex geoscientific data sets efficiently using advanced programming techniques. They can independently design problem-related geographical and geoscientific data analyses and visualisations with the help of R, efficiently implement them in the programme, and apply them appropriately. |
