This course serves as an introduction to the study of sexuality in society: how society has examined and influenced human sexuality, and how studies of human sexuality have examined and influenced society. Alongside looking at theories of sex, gender, and sexuality, some key literature on sexuality in society, and case studies, will be examined from different perspectives. Students will be asked to consider these perspectives critically, and in relation to one another. The following key questions will be of particular relevance to discussions and exercises: What is sexuality? How does sexuality relate to sex and gender in society? And importantly: How did sexuality exist and operate in the past, how does it exist and operate in the present, and how will it exist and operate in the future? The course and its selected readings are in English, focusing on these concepts from US, UK, European, and other perspectives.
