The goal of art is to create the sensation of seeing, and not merely recognizing things; the device of art is the ‘ostranenie’ of things and the complication of the form, which increases the duration and complexity of perception, as the process of perception is its own end in art and must be prolonged.” (Shklovksy, transl. by Berlina)
Viktor Shklovsky’s concept of ostranenie, which has been translated in a variety of ways, such as defamiliarize, making strange, enstranging, has influenced formalist, structuralist and poststructuralist movements of the 20th century. In this seminar, we will look closely at different theoretical conceptualizations of defamiliarization / enstrangement from Russian Formalism to New Formalism. A selection of postmodern and contemporary fictional texts will serve as our basis for analysis.
With its focus on (literary) theory, this seminar will acquaint students with the reading of very theoretical texts, while practicing their application.
The selection of primary texts that need to be acquired by students will be announced shortly. Additional material will be made available in a reader at the beginning of the semester.
We will meet on Sat, June 29th, to make up for the missed sessions (the last session of the this seminar will be on July 11th). More information on this will be given in the first session.
