Poetry has recently seen a surge in popularity, both in the US (as a survey by the National Endowment for the Arts suggests, https://www.arts.gov/art-works/2018/taking-note-poetry-reading-%E2%80%94federal-survey-results) and in the UK, where sales numbers have risen sharply (https://www.theguardian.com/books/2019/jan/21/poetry-sales-soar-as-political-millennials-search-for-clarity). In this course we will try to identify reasons for this renewed popularity of poetry and to find out what forms poetry may take on in the early 21st century, when poetry is consumed not only in the ‘classical’ form of poetry collections, but also in poetry slams or on social networks like Instagram or Facebook. We will look at ways in which the poetic form may reflect these changes, but also at how poetry takes on current social and political issues.
Among the poems/poets we will read are performance poet Kate Tempest, Carol Ann Duffy (poet laureate of the UK until 2019), Robin Robertson (whose prose poem The Long Take was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2018), and others.
A reader with poems will be made available. Students must obtain their own copies of Kate Tempest’s Let Them Eat Chaos and Robin Robertson’s The Long Take (see “Literaturhinweise” for details).
