This course introduces the students to the political systems and societies of Canada and India in a comparative perspective. Starting with an introduction of the main concepts of the course, we will work our way through the six main topics of the seminar: political culture, political systems, federalism, ethnic conflict, political parties, and the welfare state/development. Each issue will be analyzed and compared to each other and we will examine the distinctive features and genuine elements of the two countries under consideration. Therefore, each category consists of two sessions. Over the term, we will critically examine these topics from different perspectives and will figure out differences and similarities across both cases.
Why do certain institutions work in specific contexts, but not in others? What is the impact of certain actors in the different cases? How do political structures and actors interact within Canada and India? These are only a few of the questions that we will have to answer in this course.
