Lernorganisation	Please note that this course cannot be taken for moduls in the "Freier Bereich" HYBRID COURSE: This course is planned as a hybrid course. What this means concretely, we don't know yet. The state of Bavaria is currently planning to have courses meet mostly in person on campus - we will see what the concrete plans are for Augsburg University in the coming weeks. In any case, if you are unable to be on campus you will not be excluded from the course.
Leistungsnachweis	To receive credit points in this course you will compile a portfolio. This will mean that you write one response paper on a humor theory text and a second response paper which analyzes a primary work (literature / film / standup). You have the option of supplementing one of the response papers by recording a short video (about 5 mins) in which you either summarize a specific theoretical approach or provide a brief analysis of a primary work (literature/film/stand-up).

Kommentar/Beschreibung

In this course we will look at different examples of comedy as a way to think about American culture. We will concern ourselves with the questions “What is humor?” and "Is there such a thing as 'American humor'?”
In this vein, we will consider comedy as cultural texts and discuss different approaches from Humor Studies. We will discuss examples from literature to stand-up from different points of American history, and consider humor’s entanglement with its respective historical and social contexts. Materials will include a selection of literature, sitcoms, stand-up, etc. by different humorists and comedians to consider questions of race, gender, politics, and more.

Materials: Texts will be made available for you via Digicampus

You will need access to Netflix via your individual / shared / or free trial account.
