The linguistic form of a text or discourse is very much influenced by the situational, institutional context in which it is integrated, by the nature and aims of the participants, by the topical domain, by the type of interaction etc. Thus we find that the register of religious discourse is different from that of scientific discourse, that spoken and written language differ from each other as well as stylistically from other speech/writing depending on the situation (e.g. conversation between friends vs. doctor-patient talk), and that texts may be formed by conventional, but also changing genre makers (e.g. letters > email). The seminar will systematically explore and analyse such differences based on the textbook by Biber & Conrad (2019), which is also one of the books recommended for Staatsexamen preparation.
