The seminar will provide a major introduction to the 19th century-novel. The 19th century is characterised by metamorphoses in English society and its culture. New developments in science and anthropology, evolution theory, the rise of the British Empire, changing gender relations, economical progress and ensuing political and cultural crises have contributed to the enormous dynamics that epitomized life in the 19th century. The seminar will turn to most of these phenomena and their aesthetic consequences, and we will also discuss consequences for 19th century theories of the novel. We shall discuss the following texts:
Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice; Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre; Charles Dickens, Hard Times; George Eliot, Adam Bede; Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray.
All texts are available as inexpensive Oxford World Classics. Secondary material will be provided digitally and stored as files in a respective folder here.
